Benefits of Listing a Property on the National Register

Listing a property on the National Register of Historic Places is a form of acknowledgment and prestige, which places no restraints on the property. Although listing does not restrict the rights of property owners, it can provide the owner with eligibility for certain financial incentives.
  • Certified Local Governments (CLG) are eligible for matching grants to carry out historic preservation projects.
  • The Federal Government offers a program of tax incentives to support the rehabilitation of historic and non-historic buildings for income-producing purposes.
In addition to financial incentives, historic properties are given some consideration on federal project. Properties eligible for or listed on the National Register must be considered if a federally funded, licensed, or sponsored project impacts them. Moreover, these properties are given consideration in issuing a surface coal mining permit. In accordance with the Surface Mining and Control Act of 1977, there must be consideration of historic values in the decision to issue a surface coal mining permit where coal is located.
