Casper Celebrates Historic Preservation Month
Approximately 300 students and alumni joined the Casper Historic Preservation Commission and members of the Natrona County History Club for a group photo celebrating "This Place Matters". Built in 1924, the Natrona County High School is designed in the traditional Collegiate Gothic style. The dramatic entry tower is the focal point of the façade with a two-story bay window and extensive use of terra cotta ornamentation. The school is an important landmark of Casper's heritage and a source of community pride. Virginia Moriarty, 96, the oldest alumni attending the ceremony remembers learning to swim at the indoor swimming pool, an amenity unknown in Wyoming when it was installed in 1930.
The Preservation Commission also treated the public to guided historic tours of downtown and opened the historic Bishop Home for tours. The tours and group photo were designed to raise awareness about the power historic preservation has to protect and enhance our homes, neighborhoods and communities—the places that really matter to us.
