A
strange mound of earth in the middle of an open plain, this strange formation
is also known
as Grindstone Butte and Brigham’s Peak. It was called "Pyramid"
on T. H. Jefferson’s 1846 map. Because of its unusual formation, many emigrants
noted this spot. It is frequently said that Brigham Young climbed atop this
mound to deliver a sermon on his return to Winter quarters in 1847. The
noted Mormon historian, Will Bagley, says this never happened, depriving
this curious little butte of its most exalted claim.
