Archaeology Fair 2019

Join us for a day of family fun celebrating and learning about archaeology! Meet local archaeologists, ask questions, find answers, and get “hands-on” with these experts.

The 5th annual Wyoming Archaeology Fair will be held on September 7, 2019 from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site in Laramie. The fair will showcase Wyoming’s rich cultural heritage from prehistory to the present day and will provide a unique and fun hands-on learning experience for all ages. Attendees are invited to try their hand at flint knapping, atlatl throwing, pottery making, and historic games as well as hide painting, cordage making, soapstone carving and more.

The fair will feature the Wind River Dancers who will perform a variety of American Indian dance styles; Michael “Badhand” Terry, Plains Indian Historian/Lecturer/Author; Willie LeClair, Native American storyteller; and David Osmundsen who will demonstrate traditional 19th century blacksmithing.  The fair is free and open to the public.

2019---Explore the Great Unknown - John Wesley Powell

Celebrated annually in September, Wyoming Archaeology Awareness Month (WAAM) consists of a series of statewide activities and programs devoted to discussing archaeological issues and to educating the public about the importance of preserving and protecting Wyoming’s archaeological heritage. The centerpiece of WAAM is the poster we produce every year. It is distributed statewide, nationally, and internationally to more than 5,000 people and organizations. Wyoming posters have been honored with numerous awards in the State Archaeology Week Poster Contest sponsored by the Society for American Archaeology’s Public Education Committee and Council of Affiliated Societies.
